S.O.S

Saving Our Sharks

We all know that shark fin soup is a delicacy considered a symbol of wealth and prestige in Chinese culture, and because of the recent "exploding middle class in China, the demand for all things that signal an improvement in status is gargantuan. The ability to serve and consume shark fin soup is among the most revered of activities, because it signifies that one has made it."

WTF???

people, i dont even know where to begin.

WHY are we, human beings, brutally killing these beautiful, majestic kings of the sea just so we can toss a teeny bit of its precious limb (fin) into a darn bowl of soup (which is too expensive for its own good anyway) ?! i mean seriously guys, is it truly worth it ?

JUST IN CASE YOU THINK IT IS, YOU FUCKING MORON, HERE ARE SOME FUN FACTS FOR YOU.

1) something we probably all know but just CAN'T SEEM TO REMEMBER when dearest auntie serves you that bowl of cruel soup

Shark meat is worth much less, so the finless and often still-living sharks are thrown back into the sea to make room for more of the valuable fins. When returned to the ocean, the finless sharks, unable to move, will either slowly DROWN to death or are consumed by other sharks or animals. and sharks can take hours or even DAYS to die after finning (!!!)

and for what- for what- for a bowl of soup to satisfy one's appetite and ego? TF

2) for all the selfish, cold hearted i-don't-care-about-the-sharks-only-myself(s) out there

NEWS FLASH OK. We need them sharks. If they go extinct the ocean will soon die and we need the ocean to survive. D'oh. If the sharks die, we will die. and it does makes sense because sharks are the top predators of the ocean, right underneath the killer whale and by striking them out you know it means disrupting the entire marine ecosystem. simple ecology.

and the fact is, we're killing them fast. very fast.

like 100 million sharks a year fast.

3) shark fin soup cause sterility in men due to its high mercury content

I AM DAMN SERIOUS. google it.

all I'm saying is, sharks have been around for 400 million years. who are we to annihilate its entire species and to rob away our next generation's opportunity to see these utterly beautiful creatures and not to mention, destroy the ocean food chain, possibly killing all life on earth(!)

hmm.

don’t eat shark fin soup—refuse to eat at restaurants that serve it; encourage others to do the same.

and watch sharkwater here.

(the director fella is kinda cute)

serious guys, i cant stress how important this is. we've only got one world, one ocean

dont sabotage it.

every bowl counts.

,sarah.
